Author : V.E. Schwab
Series : A Darker Shade Of Magic
Genres : Fantasy
Publication : February 27th 2015 by Titan Books

Goodreads’ synopsis : Kell is one of the last Travelers—rare magicians who choose a parallel universe to visit.

Grey London is dirty, boring, lacks magic, ruled by mad King George. Red London is where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London is ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. People fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. Once there was Black London – but no one speaks of that now.

Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell smuggles for those willing to pay for even a glimpse of a world they’ll never see. This dangerous hobby sets him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a dangerous enemy, then forces him to another world for her ‘proper adventure’.

But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive — trickier than they hoped.

I really REALLY loved this book! This is one of my top 3 books read in 2015 (no surprise, Vicious is also in my top 3) !
I am in awe with V.E. Schwab’s writing style. She always manage to create such fantastic universes and characters.

I find that the universe in A Darker Shade Of Magic is more than brilliant (Well, I should say universeS, right ?!) : parallel universes with only 2 people able to travel between them. A world where magic rules, one where magic is well balanced and one which have forgotten everything about magic. I also liked the idea to define them with colors. Moreover, it takes place in London. And my love for this wonderful city is a secret to no one !

I’d rather die on an adventure than live standing still.

The characters are so intricate. Apart from the Danes, no one is really pure evil. But yet, you doubt them sometimes.

  • Kell is an antari, a powerful magician able to travel between the different Londons. He has a bad habit, he loves to take trinkets from other Londons. He can seem a little cold at times, but he is a lonely guy. And he has a really kind soul.
  • Lila is a famous thief in Grey London. When she first met Kell she had no idea that her future would be entertwined with his. She is fierce and so funny.
  • Rhy is the prince charming. He can be annoying but in a cute way. He truly cares for “his brother”. their relationship is really something I like to read about.
  • Holland is hard to figure out. You don’t know if his actions are really his, after all.

I would totally recommend this book to all the fantasy lovers ! Read it, trust me, you won’t be disappointed ! V.E. Schwab is one of my auto buy authors and I cannot wait for A Gathering Of Shadows which is book 2 in this series !

    1. Hmmm difficult question. It depends on the mood you are in. More sci fi ? Then it’s Vicious. You are in a fantasy phase ? A Darker Shade Of Magic. That’s how I would choose because both are really good
