This is the fourth book in the Falling Kingdoms series. This review will spoil you if you haven’t read the previous books.

Goodreads’ synopsis : Rebels, royals, and monsters wage war over the Mytican throne in the shocking fourth book of the Falling Kingdoms series, from New York Times bestselling author Morgan Rhodes.

CLEO: Reeling after a bloody showdown in Limeros ending with Amara’s abduction of the water crystal, and a vacancy in the Mytican throne, Princess Cleo must cast aside her feelings and look toward her kingdom with the eyes of a Queen.

MAGNUS: With the kingdom in chaos, Princess Lucia still missing and quite possibly in danger, and a shocking realization about Cleo, the steely prince is once again torn between love and duty, leaving him wondering whether he’s strong enough to rule his people.

LUCIA: The young sorcercess has had her vengeance after the cruel death of her first and only love. Heartbroken and unable to trust anyone, she allies with the awoken Fire god, who also seeks revenge.

JONAS: After escaping death by the skin of his teeth, the defeated rebel—along with a mysterious stranger–leader reunites with Princess Cleo, only to find himself a mere pawn in a dangerous hunt for the elusive Kindred.

KING GAIUS: Abandoned by Melenia and betrayed by his own children, Gaius flees Mytica and sails to Kraeshia, where he attempts to ally with the famously brutal emperor across the Silver Sea.

With Frozen Tides, Morgan Rhodes managed to top Gathering Darkness. Seriously, this series keeps getting better and better ! The story is really gripping and I cannot wait to see how this epic story will end. Even though I don’t want it to end…

Because if you don’t choose to fight against the wrong in the world, then you are the wrong in the world.

Plot :

The numerous plot twists made it hard for me to put the book down ! It was an AMAZING read.

The story has reached the Jewel, Kraeshian capital, which brings novelty to this already intricate tale.
Step by step we are learning more about this mysterious Kindred.
Another thing that made this book such a page turner was the unexpected alliances. I’m not gonna which ones because spoilers but I loved to read about enemies suddenly being allies ! But of course all of these so called alliances were coated with suspicion and mistrust.

I also enjoyed all the Magnus/cleo scenes and banters. To be honest, some moments made me want to throw the book against the wall. It was so frustrating at times !

What I find amazing with this book is how blind we are to what can happen, or will happen next ! Well from some minor ones, but it didn’t lessen the story in my opinion.
This is such a well crafted plot !
Apart from the great writing style, this book made me laugh, cry and laugh again. It’s full of banters, sarcasm but also sweet moments.

The POV changes bring so much to this story. Even though it drove me crazy at times… It allows the reader to see the whole picture, which is a pretty big one !

The ending was such a cliffhanger ! I need the sequel asap ! (funny, we got the cover reveal yesterday haha)

I only have a minor issue with this book : the “love stories”, even though we can’t really call that that way. Love interests, maybe. Anyway, I had issue with the Jonas/Lys thing. It was too abrupt, in my opinion.
On the opposite, the relationship between Cleo and Magnus had the time to grow. We witnessed how things evolved between them and that’s how I want to read it !

But you should remember that charm opens far more doors than harsh words do.” “And a sharp ax will open every door.

Characters :
– Cleo is so strong-minded now ! She is also willing to change her mind about people…
– Magnus is such a swoon worthy character haha ! He changed so much, that was great to read it !
– Jonas is a little too whiny in this book, in my opinion. Okay, he has the right to be but still. I prefer his combative side !
– Lucia changes so much in this book. I think she and Magnus are the two characters whom development is the most important.
First, she blindly trusts her new friend, but soon enough she learns to evaluate the situation.
– Amara is such a cunning and devilish character ! I totally didn’t see that coming ! I think she will be an important villain in the next book.
– Felix is far more interesting in this book than in the previous one. He tried to do the right thing but got betrayed again and again !

Overall, I loved this book !
This is such a wonderful series ! And now… well I’ll have to wait for the fifth book…

About the author

Morgan RhodesMorgan Rhodes lives in Ontario, Canada. As a child, she always wanted to be a princess — the kind that knows how to wield a sharp sword to help save both kingdoms and princes from fire-breathing dragons and dark wizards. Instead, she became a writer, which is just as good and much less dangerous. Along with writing, Morgan enjoys photography, travel, reality TV, and is an extremely picky, yet voracious reader of all kinds of books. Under another pen name, she’s a national bestselling author of many paranormal novels. Falling Kingdoms is her first high fantasy.

  1. YAY FOR FIVE STARS 😀 I haven’t started the series because of so-so reviews for the first one, but it’s heartening to see that the books continue to get better as the series goes on! I must pick it up soon…

I can’t deny that the covers for it are GORGEOUS though. The one that was recently released was just ah~ma~zing~
