This is the second post in my Franglish review. This one is different. Pierre Pevel is published in other languages than French but this series hasn’t been published in English yet. That’s why the synopsis will be in French only.
Synopsis : À première vue, on se croirait dans le Paris de la Belle Époque. En y regardant de plus près, la tour Eiffel est en bois blanc, les sirènes ont investi la Seine, les farfadets, le bois de Vincennes, et une ligne de métro rejoint le pays des fées… Dans ce Paris des merveilles, Louis Denizart Hippolyte Griffont, mage du Cercle Cyan, est chargé d’enquêter sur un trafic d’objets enchantés, lorsqu’il se retrouve impliqué dans une série de meurtres. Il lui faudra alors s’associer à Isabel de Saint-Gil, une fée renégate que le mage ne connaît que trop bien…
I really enjoyed this book ! I was drown to it because of the beautiful cover ! Then I read the synopsis and I decided to buy it !
Plot
The story takes place in Paris, during the twentieth century, la Belle Epoque. I really enjoy books set in this time period !
another thing that appealed to me was that this book mingles fantasy, mystery and a little steampunk, too !
The story follows Louis Griffont, a mage, a wizard living in this strange version of Paris where us plain humans are living alongside fae and other fantastical creatures. Ambremer is their homeland, and it’s berthed to Paris. He finds himself in an investigation that will lead him in an incredible adventure !
This book was highly entertaining and fast paced ! There were also some witty and funny moments, too.
I really enjoyed the creatures the author created, one especially : the winged cats ! Picture this : cats that can actually talk ! And trust me, they are exactly how we thing they are : snob, easy to upset and very very VERY curious.They have a peculiar ability : they absorb the words they touch; in other words they can read a book by napping on it ! How awesome is that ?!
Another thing that I found interesting and particularly original was the moments when the author was directly talking to his readers. It was really unexpected !
This is the first book in a series and I’m curious to see what’s next ! Moreover, Pierre Pevel’s writing style is really nice !
Characters
- Louis is a mage, living in a Paris where magic doesn’t surprise anyone. He lives a comfortable life with Azincourt, a winged cat. He doesn’t know that he’s in for an amazing and dangerous adventure when he agrees to help a friend !
- Isabel is quite intriguing. We get to know more about her and her past when she talks about it with other characters. She’s really smart and tough but deep down she’s hurt.

Les Enchantements d’Ambremer est le premier tome d’une série de Pierre Pevel intitulée Le Paris Des Merveilles.
Il s’agit d’un savant mélange de roman policier, fantastique avec quelques éléments de steampunk.
J’ai beaucoup aimé ce livre, on n’a vraiment pas le temps de s’ennuyer !
Pierre Pevel a créé un “bestiaire” assez impressionnant. Mon petit favori c’est Azincourt, le chat ailé de Griffont. Imaginez un chat qui parle; eh bien c’est exactement ça ! Hautains, parfois mal lunés, qui se vexent pour un rien, bref de vrais chats quoi ! De plus ils ont cette capacité extraordinaire d’intégrer les mots sur lesquels ils s’endorment. Fabuleux non ?!
J’ai beaucoup aimé les moments où l’auteur s’adresse directement au lecteur. Je n’avais jamais lu de prise à témoin comme ça ! Au début cela m’a étonnée mais je trouve ça sympa comme concept !
J’espère lire le second tome rapidement en tout cas !
Les personnages sont hauts en couleur ! Tout d’abord Louis Grifont, un puissant mage. Il vit une vie routinière, résolvant quelques affaires liées à la magie contre paiement. Quand une de ses amies lui demande un petit service (aller chercher la copie d’un livre à la bibliothèque d’Ambremer), il ne sait pas dans quoi il s’embarque : une épopée à la fois fascinante et dangereuse !
Isabel est un autre personnage très intéressant ! Hautement charismatique et enigmatique, elle semble toujours avoir un coup d’avance ! On en apprend un peu plus au fur et à mesure que l’intrigue avance !
