Synopsis : Maya is cursed. With a horoscope that promises a marriage of death and destruction, she has earned only the scorn and fear of her father’s kingdom. Content to follow more scholarly pursuits, her whole world is torn apart when her father, the Raja, arranges a wedding of political convenience to quell outside rebellions. Soon Maya becomes the queen of Akaran and wife of Amar. Neither roles are what she expected: As Akaran’s queen, she finds her voice and power. As Amar’s wife, she finds something else entirely: Compassion. Protection. Desire…

But Akaran has its own secrets—thousands of locked doors, gardens of glass, and a tree that bears memories instead of fruit. Soon, Maya suspects her life is in danger. Yet who, besides her husband, can she trust? With the fate of the human and Otherworldly realms hanging in the balance, Maya must unravel an ancient mystery that spans reincarnated lives to save those she loves the most…including herself.

I really loved this book ! This is such a unique story !

“I love you,” he murmured into my hair. “You are my night and stars, the fate I would fix myself to in any life.

Plot

In a kingdom ruled by horoscopes, Maya is living in at her father’s court. She has the darkest horoscope of them all. Everyone is either fearing her or hating her. Or both.
Forced to marry a foreign prince, she decides to marry Amar. Amar is shining, like a star, nice and oh so charming. He brings her to his realm, Akaran.

This book talks a lot about Indian folklore. I have to say I had troubles keeping up with all these folkloric references. I think it’s the only negative thing I have to say about this book, really !

I found the writing style very poetic and exquisite ! It was really easy and fast to read ! I think the way the author wrote it matches perfectly the story, the Indian folklore. It made the whole thing magical !

I know your soul. Everything else is just an ornament.

I really enjoyed the story, it was really gripping ! Even though Maya annoyed me at times. She trusts easily someone that even her guts told her not to !
She trusts this stranger more than Amar who has been nothing but kind to her. But because he can’t reveal her everything, she doubts him. Her mistake leads her on a difficult journey to fix what she did.

I really liked the love interest, it wasn’t really physical but they share a bond that has survived through Maya’s resurrection. It’s a deep bond, intimate and really beautiful !
Amar loves her through life and death. Maya’s soul recognizes his and loves him still.

No matter where we are, we’ll always share the same sky. We can always find each other in the same constellation.

This is a story about a love stronger than life and death. A love transcending them.

Characters

  • Maya is such an amazing character ! I know I told earlier that she annoyed me at times but she truly is incredible. She has an amazing inner strength, she wants to be free, to live the life she wants !
She wants what’s best and fair for the people of Bharata when these same people feared and hated her. She is driven by her heart, she has a kind soul.
  • Amar is such a swoon-worthy character ! I loved him from the start ! His job is not an easy one but he doesn’t let it darken his soul.

It’s an amazing book, unique and magical !

My star-touched queen,” he said softly, as if he was remembering something from long ago. “I would break the world to give you what you want.

About the author

roshani-chokshiRoshani Chokshi comes from a small town in Georgia where she collected a Southern accent, but does not use it unless under duress. She grew up in a blue house with a perpetually napping bear-dog. At Emory University, she dabbled with journalism, attended some classes in pajamas, forgot to buy winter boots and majored in 14th century British literature. She spent a year after graduation working and traveling and writing. After that, she started law school at the University of Georgia where she’s learning a new kind of storytelling. The Star-Touched Queen is her first novel.
