| BOOK REVIEW | HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD BY JOHN TIFFANY, JACK THORNE AND J.K. ROWLING

Harry Potter ANd The Cursed ChildHarry Potter And The Cursed Child
Author : John Tiffany, Jack Thorne & J.K. Rowling
Series : Harry Potter
Genres : Middle Grade, Fantasy
Publication : July 31st 2016 by Little, Brown

Synopsis : Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, a new play by Jack Thorne, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. The play will receive its world premiere in London’s West End on July 30, 2016.

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

I enjoyed that book but I can’t compare it to the rest of the series. Nonetheless it was a fast read and I liked it !

They were great men, with huge flaws, and you know what – those flaws almost made them greater.

Plot

We follow Albus, Harry’s son throughout his years at Hogwarts. Being Harry’s son is far from being an easy thing for him.He could become everyone he wants. He chooses to become friend with Malfoy’s son, Scorpius.

On the other side, we’ve got an older Harry’s POV. Older, and having difficulties to connect with his son.

It was an okay read. As I said before, I can’t compare it to the Harry Potter’s series, it’s very different. It’s darker and more mature in a certain way. Neverthelesse, we also can see that J.K. Rowling has not written this book. Because it’s no a book, it’s a play. And I kept that in mind while reading it. It was a whole different reading experience !

Moreover, the plot is much more simplistic in my opinion. Since it’s a play, it hadn’t bothered me at all. I wasn’t expecting more than that to be honest.

From the beginning you can sense that something is off key with one of the characters. I think it’s because it’s a play.

It’s  like a little gift to us, Potterheads. As one, I know I wil read everything  related to Harry Potter.

The truth is a beautiful and terrible thing, and should therefore be treated with great caution.

Characters

  • Albus is struggling with his father’s fame. It’s even more bothering him when he learns he’s a Slytherin. He wants to prove his own value. Even thoughhe is fed up with Harry, his father, he still loves him and seeks his approval. He is kind, soft-heartedand very loyal.
  • Scorpius is badly treated because he is a Malfoy.  Albus is his only friend. I was really touched by Scorpius ! It’s difficult to get attached to characters while reading a play but Scorpius is such a cutie !
  • Delphi is a pretty complex character.
  • Harry is as lost with his role of father as he was as The Chosen One. In a certain way, nothing has changed hahaha !

Despite some bothering points, I really enjoyed it  !

4 stars

The Spring Girls

The Spring Girls by Anna Todd

Four sisters desperately seeking the blueprints to life—the modern-day retelling of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women like only Anna Todd (After, Imagines) could do.The Spring Girls—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—are a force of nature on the New Orleans military base where they live. As different as they are, with their father on tour in Iraq and their mother hiding something, their fears are very much the same. Struggling to build lives they can be proud of and that will lift them out of their humble station in life, one year will determine all that their futures can become.
The oldest, Meg, will be an officer’s wife and enter military society like so many of the women she admires. If her passion—and her reputation—don’t derail her.
Beth, the workhorse of the family, is afraid to leave the house, is afraid she’ll never figure out who she really is.
Jo just wants out. Wishing she could skip to graduation, she dreams of a life in New York City and a career in journalism where she can impact the world. Nothing can stop her—not even love.
And Amy, the youngest, is watching all her sisters, learning from how they handle themselves. For better or worse.
With plenty of sass, romance, and drama, The Spring Girls revisits Louisa May Alcott’s classic Little Women, and brings its themes of love, war, class, adolescence, and family into the language of the twenty-first century.

| BOOK REVIEW | LORD OF SHADOWS BY CASSANDRA CLARE

lord-of-shadowsLord Of Shadows
Author : Cassandra Clare
Series : The Dark Artifices
Genres : Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, Young Adult
Publication : May 23rd 2017 by Margaret K. McElderry Books

Synopsis : Would you trade your soul mate for your soul?

A Shadowhunter’s life is bound by duty. Constrained by honor. The word of a Shadowhunter is a solemn pledge, and no vow is more sacred than the vow that binds parabatai, warrior partners—sworn to fight together, die together, but never to fall in love.

Emma Carstairs has learned that the love she shares with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, isn’t just forbidden—it could destroy them both. She knows she should run from Julian. But how can she when the Blackthorns are threatened by enemies on all sides?

Their only hope is the Black Volume of the Dead, a spell book of terrible power. Everyone wants it. Only the Blackthorns can find it. Spurred on by a dark bargain with the Seelie Queen, Emma; her best friend, Cristina; and Mark and Julian Blackthorn journey into the Courts of Faerie, where glittering revels hide bloody danger and no promise can be trusted. Meanwhile, rising tension between Shadowhunters and Downworlders has produced the Cohort, an extremist group of Shadowhunters dedicated to registering Downworlders and “unsuitable” Nephilim. They’ll do anything in their power to expose Julian’s secrets and take the Los Angeles Institute for their own.

When Downworlders turn against the Clave, a new threat rises in the form of the Lord of Shadows—the Unseelie King, who sends his greatest warriors to slaughter those with Blackthorn blood and seize the Black Volume. As dangers close in, Julian devises a risky scheme that depends on the cooperation of an unpredictable enemy. But success may come with a price he and Emma cannot even imagine, one that will bring with it a reckoning of blood that could have repercussions for everyone and everything they hold dear.

polka dots bar small

Back into the Shadowhunters universe ! I was SO SO SO happy ! I really loved this book !

Everyone is afraid of something. We fear things because we value them. We fear losing people because we love them. We fear dying because we value being alive. Don’t wish you didn’t fear anything. All that would mean is that you didn’t feel anything.

Plot

It follows Emma, Jules and their little family, weeks after Lady Midnight’s ending.  Gwyn, comes and asks Mark for help : Kieran is about to be killed by his father, the Unseelie King.
When in Faerie, the Queen bargains with Julian. I’m not gonna say more because I don’t want to spoil you !

I was kind of fearing this book to be honest ! I didn’t want it to suffer from the “second book syndrome”, you know ? Slow, without a real plot. Well, let me tell you, this book is far from it !!! But how could I doubt ? It never happened with any Cassandra books but who knows, right ?!

Anyway, it’s the sequel I was waiting for ! We can compare it to Lady Midnight, when it comes to intensity, pace and content.
We dive into a dark shadowhunter’s time. The Cold Peace’s aftermaths are more than present in this installment. Downworlders are very aggressive towards Shadowhunters and, with the rise of extremists, the alliance is more endangered than ever. The Cohort wants to take power to put an end to this precarious peace.

There’s something about a place you’ve been with someone you love. It takes on a meaning in your mind. It becomes more than a place. It becomes a distillation of what you felt for each other. The moments you spend in a place with someone… they become part of its bricks and mortar. Part of its soul.

I love to witness how Clare’s writing is evolving, “growing” somehow. Her stories get more intricate with each book.
I also particularly appreciate how she threads the characters from her previous books to this already intricate net. It was just perfect.
Another thing I like is the diversity. It’s nothing new with her characters but Ty is such a sweet character and I think autism should be treated more often in books.

Now let’s talk about that goddamn cliffhanger ! It broke my heart and I can’t believe we have to wait that long for the final book !

Characters

  • Emma is the definition of badass. She doesn’t allow her feelings to matter when it comes to saving her dear Jules and his lovely family. She is so strong. I also enjoyed how it wasn’t solely focused on Emma/Jules relationship.
  • Julian is getting more and more cunning. He is entirely focused on his family’s safety and at times, even Emma couldn’t compete with it !
  • Mark is so precious. He is somehow torn between Kieran and Cristina. He kind of misses his life in the Wild Hunt but is also happy to be back in the Shadowshunter’s world.
  • Kieran is a character you can’t just hate, really.
  • Kit is going to be the next Jace Herondale, I’m sure of it !
  • Ty is so cute. He sees things differently but he is stronger than we think.
  • Zara and Perfect Diego can go to hell for all I care !
  • Arthur is such a complex character, I wish we got to learn even more from his past.
  • Diana, I LOVED finding out her big secret, her backstory. It was so interesting and seriously I didn’t see it coming at all  !

That’s it ! As always, I totally recommend this book !

There’s something about a place you’ve been with someone you love. It takes on a meaning in your mind. It becomes more than a place. It becomes a distillation of what you felt for each other. The moments you spend in a place with someone… they become part of its bricks and mortar. Part of its soul.

polka-dots-bar-small

I was sent this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you again !
This is the second book in The Source series. I read the first book a year and a half ago.

Plot

The first book was sometimes slow paced to allow the author to set the scene, the world and introduce the characters.
This book is far from being slow paced, it’s gripping, witty and really interesting !

If you dwell on the pain of the past you will find that it is the pain of your future.

I really enjoyed Brigadoon. I was particularly curious about this special place, I wished they stayed longer haha ! The eerie atmosphere, the new characters, it was really great ! I really enjoyed the chapters taking place at Brigadoon. And let’s be honest, I was dreading the next confrontation between Reese and Ambrose.

Said confrontation was far from what I was expecting ! There’s blood, betrayal and multiple fights.

All books are magical, whether they are enchanted or not.

I really enjoyed reading this book ! It’s well written and you can’t help but want to find out how Reese and her friends will survive the next obstacle life will throw in their way !

Characters

  • Reese is now way stronger than ever. But she needs to learn how to wield her power properly.
  • Erik is solely focused on getting Em back. It got on my nerves to be honest. I understand how difficult it must be but still, there’s so much to achieve and he needs to stay focused !
  • Eva is a strangely interesting character ! She is mysterious and a great guide for Reese and her friends.
  • Quinn was such a comic relief ! He is one of my favorite characters, he made me laugh so much !
  • Dani is such a fierce warrior. I really appreciate her.

SUMMER / BEACH READS

summer reads

Hello lovelies ! I missed yesterday’s TTT, so I decided to do a post about it anyway ! In Summer, I tend to read more romance books ! So yeah, be prepared !

The Islanders by Katherine Applegate is a series that I really really loved ! It’s about a bunch of teens living on a small island. Their posse, the relationships, the plot, the writing style… everything about this series I absolutely adored !

The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. I’ve only read the first two books but I can picture myself reading it wrapped in a comfy blanket, sipping tea or on my balcony, while drinking iced tea !

Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan is a wonderful contemporary read but I wouldn’t bring it to the beach with me you know ? I’m not a fan of crying in public hahaha !

Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson feels like a summer holiday. It’s about a road trip, and there are playlists ! Yep, definitively holidays !

Anna And The French Kiss and its two companion novels by Stephanie Perkins is the cutest read you could ever find ! Perfect for the Summer !

The After series by Anna Todd is far from being your usual romance read ! And it’s another book I wouldn’t bring to the beach with me ! I was obsessed with this series, I was so hard to put the book down !

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover is an eye-opener book ! It’s far from being a light read, but I loved it so much. It can be said for all CoHo’s books though.

The Air He Breathes by Brittainy C. Cherry, another powerful romance ! The perfect summer read !

That’s it ! Have you read any of these books ?
