Goodread’s synopsis : Seventeen-year-old Caymen Meyers studies the rich like her own personal science experiment, and after years of observation she’s pretty sure they’re only good for one thing—spending money on useless stuff, like the porcelain dolls in her mother’s shop.
So when Xander Spence walks into the store to pick up a doll for his grandmother, it only takes one glance for Caymen to figure out he’s oozing rich. Despite his charming ways and that he’s one of the first people who actually gets her, she’s smart enough to know his interest won’t last. Because if there’s one thing she’s learned from her mother’s warnings, it’s that the rich have a short attention span. But Xander keeps coming around, despite her best efforts to scare him off. And much to her dismay, she’s beginning to enjoy his company.
She knows her mom can’t find out—she wouldn’t approve. She’d much rather Caymen hang out with the local rocker who hasn’t been raised by money. But just when Xander’s attention and loyalty are about to convince Caymen that being rich isn’t a character flaw, she finds out that money is a much bigger part of their relationship than she’d ever realized. And that Xander’s not the only one she should’ve been worried about.
I really really enjoyed this book ! I read it in 24 hours, I couldn’t put it down !
Feelings can be the most costly thing in the universe.
Caymen Meyers is living with her mother in a tiny apartment, above their dolls shop. She is the perfect daughter. She helps her mother at the shop and isn’t planning on going to college the next year because she wants to help full time.
Her bestfriend is Skye. Skye is the original one. She is dating a rock guitarist, Toad. Skye wants Caymen to date Mason, the band’s singer.
But then, she meets Xander. He is rich, he is cool. Let’s summarize by : they live in different worlds. Xander’s family is rich and famous. On the contrary, Caymen is poor. Her father abandoned her mother when he learned she was pregnant. Her mother’s parents disowned her so Caymen doesn’t know them. She only has her mother.
So everything is separating her from Xander. But she kind of appreciates him. And he is stubborn. He manages to make her accept his presence.
I really like this story. It’s cute, and there’s more than just a complicated romance. Caymen is starting to hide things from her mother. And her mother is doing the same. This book shows how honesty is important in any relationship. Their mutual lies are keeping them away.
– Caymen is like the perfect daughter until she meets Xander : honest, loyal. Her relationship with isn’t rely healthy in the beginning.
– Xander is the perfect gentleman. He deeply cares for Caymen. He is rich, but isn’t acting like a spoiled child at all.
– Skye is a great best friend. Always there when needed.
– Mason could have been the perfect match for Caymen, if it weren’t for Xander. He is nice, cool and is from her world, the mundane’s world.
There are a few things that I didn’t really like :
First, the “toilet paper” scene that totally seemed out of the blue. It felt like the author needed a reason for the girls to be at Xander’s house. The scene inside the house I really liked, let’s be clear. It was a great moment.
Secondly, I wished we had more informations about Skye, and Toad. I know that they aren’t the main characters, but it would have added some depth to the story, in my opinion.
Well, that’s all folks ! I highly recommend this book if you want a cute contemporary read ! It’s quickly read and really adorable !
