I am so glad I finally read this book !

Plot

It takes place a few weeks after Crown Of Midnight’s ending. Celaena isn’t the same as in the previous book ; her past caught up with her. She is now desperate to find a way to be true to her promise, made on Nehemia’s tomb.
At Rifhthold, there’s a chasm between Chaol and Dorian.

There are lots of new characters in this book. I think it adds something to this already incredible story.
Moreover, the dynamic between our main characters has changed.

And then I am going to rattle the stars.

This book is divided in two parts. The first one is a bit slow paced but I think it’s necessary for our understanding. It introduces us to 3 new important characters : Sorscha, Aedion and Rowan. We also get to meet Aelin, a part of herself that Celaena managed to bury deep inside her until now.
Moreover, it also introduces us to Wendlyn. Having a new setting is really effective, in my opinion. It keeps us curious, and eager to learn more about it. So yeah, it’s slower but it settles our new surroundings.

The little flashbacks in Celaena’s pasts are really interesting. It allows us to learn more and more about our main character.

We also get to follow the witches, Manon Blackbeak particularly. She is heartless and strong minded. We’re slowly learning what the king is plotting.

He would see that world reborn, even if it took his last breath. Even if he had no name now, no position or title save Oath-Breaker, Traitor, Liar.

it’s the third book but the story doesn’t get repetitive. The author has created a really great and complex world. She wrote equally complex characters and the plot is really captivating, in my opinion.

The second part is way more action packed, it’s really gripping ! So much is happening either in Rifthold and in Wendlyn. The “final battle” is really epic ! I was totally picturing it with awesome CGI and all that jazz haha !

She was Aelin Ashryver Galathynius—and she would not be afraid.

I really enjoying the mystery around the new threats. Celaena/Aelin and Rowan teaming up to investigate was really funny to read about ! The dynamic between these two, it’s really something ! It was really great to witness how they went from somewhat enemies to partners, even friends.

Aedion’s story is also highly interesting ! How he decided to sell his soul to serve his mortal enemy, and his motives for doing so !

The ending is such a cliffhanger ! Seriously I can’t believe how hard it must have been to wait a whole year to learn what happens next !

Characters

  • Celaena is whinier in this book. She even annoyed me sometimes. She was complaining too much, in my opinion ! Of course she had reasons to, but I was so used to the badass Celeana that I found it quite shocking ! But I’m sure she will be even more badass in Queen Of Shadows !
  • Chaol is kind of lost in this book ! He doesn’t who he should protect and how to deal with Aelin. He really wants to protect Dorian, even though their friendship will never be the same !
  • Dorian is getting more mature thanks to his power. He becomes a more important character and he is getting more and more interesting !
  • Aedion is related to Aelin. He is a really refreshing character ! He is torn between his shame and doing whatever it takes to save Terrasen or his queen !
  • Rowan is another highly interesting character. Prince fae, he doesn’t hold Aelin high in his esteem. But he gets to know her. His past is also a dark one.
  • Manon is a witch. At first heartless and almost soulless, she starts to think on her own. She shares a special bond with her wyvern, Abraxos !

It would not take a monster to destroy a monster – but light, light to drive out darkness.

5 stars

I can’t wait for the Queen Of Shadows’ US’ paperback to be released ! I need MORE.

The Assassin's BladeAssassin’s Blade
Author : Sarah J. Maas
Series : Throne Of Glass
Genres : Fantasy, Young Adult
Publication : March 3rd 2015 by Bloomsbury USA Childrens (first published March 4th 2014)

This is the novellas’ bind up about Celeana Sardothien’s life prior to Throne Of Glass.

Synopsis : Celaena Sardothien is her kingdom’s most feared assassin. Though she works for the powerful and ruthless Assassin’s Guild, Celaena yields to no one and trusts only her fellow killer for hire, Sam.When Celaena’s scheming master, Arobynn Hamel, dispatches her on missions that take her from remote islands to hostile deserts, she finds herself acting independently of his wishes–and questioning her own allegiance. But by defying Arobynn’s orders, Celaena risks unimaginable punishment, and with Sam by her side, he is in danger, too. polka dots bar small

It’s a bind up of 5 novellas about Celeana Sardothien, her past as Adarlan’s assassin. How she became the Celeana from Throne Of Glass.

I was glad to see the events that forged her ! In my opinion, these novellas are important to understand some of her reactions ! Her relationship with Sam was cute to witness, to see how it changed.
But her relationship with Arobynn Hamel is also an important one. They have a special and awkward bond. Maybe we’ll witness their confrontation in a future book ? I would love to read about it !!!

If you can learn to endure pain, you can survive anything. Some people learn to embrace it- to love it. Some endure it through drowning it in sorrow, or by making themselves forget. Others turn it into anger.

The Celeana from the past is even cockier than what she is “nowadays”. She really is stubborn, sure of herself, arrogant and so sure of herself and her amazing skills.

Arobynn is just like I imagined him. Cruel, possessive and remorseless. He is such an exclusive guy !! It’s his Celeana and won’t share her. It’s his heir.

Sam is an awesome character, somehow softhearted and kind despite his job.

She was fire, she was darkness, she was dust and blood and shadow.

And now for the rating :

  • The Assassin And The Pirate Lord : 5 stars
It’s what begins all the following events.
  • The Assassin And The Healer : 3.5 stars
It’s not the most important or interesting one ! Except if we cross path again with this healer.
  • The Assassin And The Desert : 5 stars
It’s an important one to understand why she is that skilled.
  • The Assassin And The Underworld : 4 stars
The start of Celeana’s hellish journey.
  • The Assassin And The Empire : 5 stars
This one tells what happened right before she went to Endovier.

There was no way in hell she was going to move to the southern continent without all of her books.

| BOOK REVIEW | CROWN OF MIDNIGHT BY SARAH J. MAAS

Crown Of MidnightCrown Of Midnight
Author : Sarah J. Maas
Series : Throne Of Glass
Genres : Fantasy, Young Adult
Publication : September 2nd 2014 by Bloomsbury USA Childrens (first published August 15th 2013)

This is the second book in the Throne Of Glass series. This review will spoil you if you haven’t read the first book.

Synopsis : An assassin’s loyalties are always in doubt but her heart never wavers

Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become the King’s Champion. But she is far from loyal to the crown. Though she hides her secret vigilantly, her deadly charade becomes difficult when she realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. No one is above questioning her allegiance—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.

Then, one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena’s world shatters, she will be forced to decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie … and whom she is willing to fight for.

I am so glad I decided to reread the first two books in this series before reading the novellas and Heir Of Fire ! I buddy read it with Donna from chocolatenwafflesblog ! And that was really nice to be able to share our thoughts about it !

Plot

It takes place months after Throne Of Glass’ ending. Celeana is going on deadly missions for the King, as his champion.

The best lies were always mixed with truth.

This book is divided in two parts. The first part is a bit slower. Celeana is kind of investigating about Archer and a secret rebel organization.
In this first part we get to see a more human Celeana. Sure she is still a badass assassin and fighter. She seems to be made of steel. But she acts like her heart tells her to. She does what’s right.

She also opens up a little more to her friends. She trusts Chaol enough to confide in him about some parts of her past. She also trusts Nemehia with some of her most important secrets.
She is not as closed to Dorian as she used to. But Dorian has also things to deal with, on his own.

I worry because I care. Gods help me, I know I shouldn’t, but I do. So I will always tell you to be careful, because I will always care what happens.

The second part is way more fast paced and even though the first part is interesting, this one is even more compelling.
It’s such a page turner ! I loved learning about Celeana’s legacy. And as a reread, it allowed me to catch the little clues about it haha !

Characters

  • Celeana is such an interesting character. The duality in her is highly entertaining and original ! She is both a deadly assassin and a girly girly woman !
  • Chaol is slowly changing his commitment. Celeana is now taking a bigger part in his life.
  • Dorian is way more broody in this book, at least for the first part. He becomes more interesting at some point and I hope to learn more about him in Heir Of Fire.
  • Nehemia is really a badass character. She knows what she has to do to save her people and help Celean embrace her destiny.

Overall I really loved this book ! And it was really fun to buddy read it with Donna from chocolatenwafflesblog ! Don’t forget to go and read her review when she posts it !

| BOOK REVIEW | THRONE OF GLASS BY SARAH J. MAAS

I am so glad I decided to reread this book ! I forgot how much I love this story !

Plot

The plot is really great, in my opinion. It’s epic, witty, fast paced and mixed with magic ! Could it be greater ? Maybe with plot twist but oh wait ! There were plot twists !

The setting is really well described. It’s not for nothing that there’s a map ! We mainly got to see Rifthold, the capital city of Adarlan. But I’m glad it was focused on the castle because it’s huge and I was really able to imagine it !

Libraries were full of ideas–perhaps the most dangerous and powerful of all weapons.

Another thing I enjoyed is how the characters get to care for each other. The relationships feel genuine. It takes time to trust and know someone and to finally appreciate the person. I think it’s well written and realistic.
It’s something that sometimes is lacking in some books. And that makes me cringe a little when all feel insta : insta-love or insta-friendship.

This book is really fast paced, it’s such a page turner ! I was glad it was a reread because I had an hectic week and didn’t find a lot of time for reading.
I also loved how dark it could become at some times. It was a little creepy and mysterious and that added something to the story !
The magic part is really compelling because it’s something that was forbidden and long gone. Plus magic is always something that gets my interest !

You could rattle the stars,” she whispered. “You could do anything, if only you dared. And deep down, you know it, too. That’s what scares you most.

The competition was highly entertaining ! I loved witnessing how Celeana trained and gained back her abilities. She is truly an amazing character !

I also loved the romance. You can totally see that it is not the main topic. It’s on the background and yet it’s existing. It adds a certain entertainment !

The writing style is really gripping. Sarah J. Maas knows how to write and original and compelling story !

We all bear scars,… Mine just happen to be more visible than most.

Characters

  • Celeana is such an interesting character ! She is a strange mix between a deadly assassin and a frivolous woman ! She loves probably equally a good weapon and a fancy dress ! That’s quite original ! She has a secret we don’t get to know in this book except that it concerns her childhood.
  • Dorian. Oh Dorian ! I love this character ! He is so selfless and so different from his father ! He genuinely cares for his friend and is trying his best to be someone good !
  • Chaol is also interesting. He is torn between his duty and what his guts are telling him. This duality is really nice to witness.
  • Nehemia is one of my favorite characters. She is also badass in her way. I’m not gonna say a lot about her because of spoilers but let me say that she is full of surprises !
  • The king is really a frightening character ! I can’t wait to learn more about him !

5 stars

Overall it’s a great fantasy read and I highly recommend it, not only to YA lovers !
